The Wilton bench vise is one of the best money can buy. The 450 and the 450n is their Machinist line and is perhaps the best they ever made. There are import copies so be sure it is cast Made In USA. Don't ever buy a cheap Harbor Freight vise! • I like the rigid base vises. They are more stable, don't slip under load, and don't have swivel clamps to wear out. However, the swivel base vise is versatile and gives operator freedom and is especially useful in a small machine shop. • This mod transfers the swivel mechanism from the vise to the base. It is smooth, stable, and very rigid. The simple rollers make it particularly smooth in operation. • In this video I go over all aspects of the build including a little drawing which includes all sizes and dimensions. • The Rigid base Bench vise mounted on a pedestal frees the machinist up to hold work that may be difficult to hold in the vise on the bench. By incorporating a swivel in the build work pieces may now be held with a great degree of flexibility. • In my small home shop I am able to hold very long pieces with ease. Also, because of the rigidity offered with this mod I am able to torque down on and bend some big work pieces as well, • That inherit rigidity also comes in handy when I need to Loosen or even tighten some very stuck or large nuts and bolts. • I hope you find this Wilton 450 Bench vise swivel Mod useful.
