7/12/2024 • What a beautiful hike. My road trip starts with a bang. The trail is well maintained all the way to the iconic Sawtooth Lake. There were a few river crossings but logjams kept my feet dry. At Alpine Lake, I got the first glimpse of Alpine Peak and knew summit can be a challenge. • After going off-trail at the southern end of Sawtooth Lake, I was in no man's land. Despite being winded after a long dormant season, I thoroughly enjoyed the alpine meadows, running creeks and wild flowers. Climbing the loose scree to the ridge was a struggle - the sandy route and rocky route were equally slippery. But the final ridge walk to the summit was fun and not too dangerous. Nothing beyond class 2. • Thanks to the long daylight, my pace was slow but I wasn't worried. I took frequent naps, and a quick bath in Little Sawtooth Lake on my way down. I returned to my car by 8pm, and spent another night at Iron Creek Trailhead. • Here's my Sawtooth Idaho Road Trip playlist -- • Sawtooth Idaho Road Trip (Jul 2024) • ======================= Sawtooth Idaho Road Trip ======================= • A while ago a friend asked me about my next hiking plan. I told him I was looking into Idaho. Hiking in Idaho? he said, I thought they only have potatoes. Haha funny. I didn't object, as he might be right - I do keep a bag of those in my fridge. But I should soon find out. • So, in July I flew to Boise, rent a car for a week, and did my thing in Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA), which encompasses Sawtooth Wilderness and a few others. My hikes were concentrated between the small towns of Stanley (pop. 117) and Ketchum (pop. 3,873) along the 60-mile stretch of Highway 75, allowing me to minimize driving and maximize time spent outdoor at a more casual pace. In conclusion, the Gem State is indeed one to be uncovered. • Here's the 8-day itinerary -- • Day 1 (7/11/2024, Thu) • fly: LAS to BOI • drive: Boise to Stanley, ID • stop by Kirkham Hot Springs • overnight: Iron Creek TH • Day 2 (7/12/2024, Fri) • hike: Alpine Peak (9,861') • overnight: Iron Creek TH • Day 3 (7/13/2024, Sat) • hike: Patterson Peak (10,873') • wildfire breaks out / Redfish Lake Lodge closed / Sawtooth partially closed / reassess hiking plan • overnight: Iron Creek TH • Day 4 (7/14/2024, Sun) • hike: Goat Lake • overnight: Lower Hell Roaring TH • Day 5 (7/15/2024, Mon) • hike: Finger of Fate • resupply: Ketchum, ID • overnight: Norton Lakes TH • Day 6 (7/16/2024, Tue) • hike: Norton Peak (10,336') • overnight: Pettit Lake TH • Day 7 (7/17/2024, Wed) • hike: Alice Lake Twin Lakes half loop • overnight: Pettit Lake TH • Day 8 (7/18/2024, Thu) • drive: Pettit Lake TH to BOI • fly: BOI to LAS • Here's the overall stats of the 8-day road trip -- • Total miles driven = 493 • Total miles hiked = 67.1 • Total elevation gain/loss = 14,889' • Total expense = $473.81
