Used in Japan as a way to hold a metsubushi, but also when it needed to be accessed quickly you could just break the egg and then do your movement. Metsubushi is used for blinding an attacker and creating a diversion even in order to allow you to escape or to perform a technique. So it's just a small example of the different devices that could be used to carry metsubushis. By no means limited to this, but, was often used.
