SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vadim Pisarev, ballet instructor and former ballet dancer: • It is a great loss for the entire world of ballet because Katya (nickname for Kutubaeva) was not only a talented person with God-given ballet qualities, but she had a good head and appearance. She was a very pretty girl, she was smart. After lessons, I would set aside time for her and we would work together because I saw in this person a star, a star of world ballet. Everybody in the theater liked her. She was already working with professional artists in the ballet halls, as an artist. She grew up so much this summer and everything was going very well and would have continued so if it wasn't for this missile, this explosion that took the life of Galina Vassilievna (Volodina), the instructor, and of the grandmother and of Ekaterina. May they rest in peace. • 6. Wide of church • STORYLINE • Mourners in the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic bid farewell to a 12-year-old promising ballet talent, her grandmother, and an esteemed ballet instructor, all three of whom were killed in a missile strike in central Donetsk. • According to a statement released by the Donbas Opera the day after the bombing, Ekaterina Kutubaeva and her instructor Galina Volodina had just finished a practice session together. • The two were walking on Pushkin Boulevard where the 12-year-old's grandmother was due to pick her up. • Volodina had helped Kutubaeva across the street to meet her grandmother when they came under shelling, and all three of them perished. • It is a great loss for the entire world of ballet, ballet instructor Vadim Pisarev told the Associated Press at the funeral, saying that the child's potential prompted him to give her extra attention after lessons. • I saw in this person a star, a star of world ballet, he added, with the sound of sporadic explosions constantly booming in the background. • Ekaterina was one of the last remaining young girls from her class, as most of her peers had left Donetsk for Russia since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. • In order to keep up her form, she sought to begin one-on-one lessons with Volodina, the most decorated ballet teacher in the Donbas Opera. • They would only have one lesson together. • According to the Donbas Opera's statement, Volodina was born in 1950 and has been teaching the craft since 1990. • The families of the victims asked the media for privacy during the mourning period, and asked cameras to stay outside the church. • =========================================================== • Clients are reminded: • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
