Hidalgo County Border History (8 min. 16 sec.) • Ranchers, farmers and former law enforcement officials from southwest New Mexico describe the changes in border migration and criminal activity that have taken place in the last few decades. The Hidalgo Country residents recall how the border has become more dangerous in recent years. • This video contains excerpts from an October 2010 group interview with five residents of rural Hidalgo County, New Mexico, which borders on Mexico and Arizona. Former Hidalgo County Sheriff Bill Cavaliere, former teacher Ed Kerr and former Border Patrol Agent Harold Kuenstler are featured in this excerpt. • Carolyn Gonzales and Richard Schaefer of the University of New Mexico Cross-Border Issues Group conducted the interview, which was filmed and edited by Richard Schaefer. Two other video excerpts from the same group interview are available on YouTube -- one on Border Patrol efforts to seal the border and the rise of organized crime in Hidalgo County and one dealing with some of the specific problems the ranchers have faced. • The Cross-Border Issues Group Web Site contains articles and video links to many more immigration and cross-border issues.
