To feed a baby bird, place the baby on a napkin. Ensure to be in a comfortable position yourself. Many of us prefer to be seated on a chair while placing the baby on a kitchen table. Have your formula and cleaning tissues ready before you handle the baby. • Feed in a gentle and slow manner. For smaller baby birds, I prefer using 1 ml syringes. Your feeding speed must match the intake of the baby. Be sure to pause whenever the baby requires a break. Tapping lightly on the baby’s beak encourages a feeding response – the baby will immediately gape if it is hungry. Once the baby bird has consumed an adequate quantity, it will refuse to gape. Feeding must immediately be stopped. • N.B. Baby barbets particularly move by rapidly backing away until they feel something touching their backs – seen in video 3. Ensure they do not fall off from a height if they have been placed on a table. • For detailed instructions on hand-rearing baby barbets, please refer to our protocol: http://rehabbersden.org/Hand-rearing%... • Devna Arora © Rehabber’s Den, 2014 • www.rehabbersden.org
