A few moments from the WAM! channel, also known as the Starz Family Channel in 2001. WAM was part of the Starz Encore group of channels. • Commentary • We just watched a few moments from the WAM! Channel, also known as the Starz Family channel in 2001. The WAM! channel was a channel in the Starz/Encore group of channels that were available on satellite TV and extended cable systems. It presented mostly family entertainment with G, PG and sometimes PG-13 titles. • The channel originally launched in 1994 under the name Tweens before being changed to WAM! America's Kidz Network in 1997. It was changed to Encore Wam in 2005. The name WAM! was chosen through a naming contest. It stands for What Adults are Missing . • This video represents a typical transition from one movie to the next on the WAM! channel in 2001. So far this is the only video I've found with WAM! graphics this early in my collection, but there's always a chance there's more. This sequence appeared between the movies The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again and Disney's Inspector Gadget. • When watching these on screen graphics you can see the extreme use of color and movement used by WAM! in the early days. This early in its history, it was still trying to appeal directly to kids rather than families. In some marketing materials at the time, it was commonly referred to as the Starz Family Channel, but on the channel itself, it presented as a kids channel. You can just imagine the difficulty the marketing department had in presenting this channel to adults, or in other words, the people who would be paying for it as part of the Starz package. The word WAM! doesn't instantly translate into family entertainment in a person's mind like the name Disney does. To get to that point you would have to build the brand and WAM! was really just one of many channels offered in the Starz package that just had a cute little name. That's probably why it was often referred to as The Starz Family Channel. • Surprisingly, at least to me, they kept using the name WAM all the way up to 2011. From 2005 to 2011 the channel was called the Encore Wam channel. Today the brands Starz and Encore have been combined into one brand simply called STARZ ENCORE on satellite TV systems like Dish. The STARZ ENCORE package on Dish has 8 channels including the main channel and additional channels focussed on Westerns, Action, Suspense, Black, Classic, Family and Espanol. • Well those are my comments for this video.
