The hymn is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life, through trials, and through death. In Luke 24:29, the disciples asked Jesus to abide with them for it is toward evening and the day is spent . Using the more personal phrasing Abide with Me , Lyte composed the hymn. • 29. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. -Luke 24:29 • Verse 1 • Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; • the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. • When other helpers fail and comforts flee, • Help of the helpless, O abide with me. • Verse 2 • Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes. • Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. • Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee; • in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. • (These are the two verses I selected for the video, but the music works for any two verses.) • CREDIT: • https://sghistory.com/ • https://namethathymn.com/ • https://hymnary.org/ • https://sogospel.fandom.com/wiki/SoGo... • https://www.biblegateway.com/
