Title: God Our Refuge • Text: Psalm 46 • Verse: Psalm 62:2 • Youth Pastor: Andrew Williams • Get Ready for Sunday: • Alex Honnold is one of the most daring rock climbers alive. His most well-known climb is probably Yosemite Park’s El Capitan—he scaled this 3,000-foot cliff face without fall protection (much to his mother’s chagrin, I assume.) Once, when Honnold discussed his ability to do things that would scare the average person half to death, he said that, in fact, most people aren’t afraid of heights. What we fear is falling and dying. (This makes sense when you think about how freely we pile into elevators and airplanes.) The reason Honnold has less fear than most of us when it comes to scaling great heights is that he has trained to the point that he believes he can do it. He said, “If I thought I was going to fall off a cliff, I would find that very scary. The key is to make sure you don’t fall off.” I think this helps us see how Christians can obey God’s frequent command, “Don’t be afraid.” We can’t simply flip a switch and say goodbye to fear. But instead of learning to trust ourselves (like Honnold has done), we learn to trust our Father in heaven. As we gain practiced confidence in God’s love and care, we will experience ever-increasing freedom from anxiety and fear. This Sunday, we will be in Psalm 46. Please read these eleven verses in preparation for our time together. See you Sunday!
