In 1974, the chimpanzees at Gombe National Park in Tanzania began a series of violent attacks that stunned researchers, including Jane Goodall. Over the next four years, the Kasekela chimpanzees would decimate the Kahama group. The twist? These groups used to be one and the same. It's taken decades for researchers to understand why the chimp group split in two, let alone why they fought so brutally. And just as researchers have started to understand the complex dynamics that led to this war, another group split is beginning in Ngogo, Uganda. Thanks to Ian Gilby, Joseph T.
