Duran Duran - Before The Rain starring British acting legend Michael Redfern is a pop promo we made for Duran Duran in 2011 for their new album, 'All you Need is Now' - Duran Duran management asked a bunch of professional film-makers like me to make official videos for their album. They would then select the best ones and pay just for those. • So we made this as a spec video (meaning we made it for the sole intention of getting paid by Duran Duran management to use it as their official video). This video did very well, coming second in a commission that saw hundreds of entries from hundreds of film makers all over the world. • Whilst we were pleased with how well the video was received, it was not selected as the official video, thus we received no payment from Duran Duran for it. In December 2014, my company (Transcendent Films) adopted a new policy whereby visuals that have not been paid for by artists or companies will not be granted free promotion or paid revenue. • From February 2011 to December 2014, Duran Duran 'monetised' my video here on YouTube. Meaning, they have received the ad revenue from over 50,000 views (which would be quite a lot of cash), plus they have received the benefit of free promotion for this track, their album and their band. • Although we recognise Duran Duran hold the copyright for their music, where that music is synced to a visual creation that took a lot of hard work and effort for no money... That is hardly fair or proportionate. This is our business and we do this for a living, so we have had to start adopting this new approach of removing their music (and thus, 100% copyright) from our video and replacing it with royalty-free music. • If you're a fan of Duran Duran and would love to see this video with the song, we have not forgotten you. My father took a photograph of my brothers and I stood next to Simon Le Bon's yacht that had moored up at a jetty in my home town - Crosshaven, Co. Cork. I wonder if he remembers?! • For this piece, I wanted to use an iconic English actor from the same period Duran Duran were at their height in the 80s. • Fortunately for me, veteran actor Michael Redfern, who played the dad in the long running Oxo family commercials, lived close by and he was excited to play the protagonist tormented by his troubled past. • His tormentor, a ghost child played by Connor Keeley, is now a seasoned actor himself, having directed him before in a film I made last year. • It's taken many weeks to pull this together and I've nothing but praise for the many people who made it possible. • CREDITS: • ** LEADING CHARACTERS ** • Guy: Michael Redfern • Kid: Connor Keeley • ** BAR SCENE ** • Bartender: Dave O'Brien • Punters/Extras: Tony Slater, Steve Ash, Marie Dunne, Ann O'Keeffe, Lynn Burton, Graham Cahill and Denis O'Keeffe • ** STREET OF SHAME SCENE ** • Doctor: Tony Westin • Girl/Madonna: Siân Peters • Prostitutes: Ann Brown, Robin Zorn, Julie Ashurst • ** BALLROOM SCENE ** • Military Children: Abbymay Daly, Stevie Leask, Katie Stewart, Tyler Brumitt, Charlie Godden, Jennifer Barbour, Love Wesenauer, Aimee Pembroke • High Society Elite: Chris Curran, Ralf Tenbrink, Sam Johnstone, Jack Brown, Gerry Chenhall, Adam Kay, Albert Stokes, Stewart Stark, Cristian López, Alejandro Brodie Scott, Michael Moran, Marion Parmenter, Jasmin Daniel, Brogan Matthews, Faith Morgan, Karen Harris, Carrie Rudge, Karina Tanya Goldie Bowen, Julie Kay, Vicky Kay, Yolande Stokes, Aoife Leddy, Helen Stark, Nicola Brodie Scott, Paris Brumitt, Martina Grundso, Robin Zorn, Kimberly Wesenauer • ** COLLISION SCENE ** • Schoolfriends: Jacob Brown, Chloe Mitcham • Extras: Lee Keeley, Mark Williams, Simon Stewart • ** PRODUCTION TEAM ** • Written Directed by: Kris Koster • Camera Assistant: Arturo Vilar • Producer: Kris Koster • Production Assistants: Ann Brown, Suzanne Cambridge • Makeup Hair: Sonia Conway, Charlotte Smith, Louise Ashley • Choreography: Suzanne Cambridge, Jessica Clements • Costumes: Sharon Brumitt • Additional Music: Composer Henry Purcell, 'The Masque in Dioclesian: IV.
