The Kithara of Ancient Greece

To keep my compositions for lyre flowing thick and fast, here is then next installment of my new YouTube playlist series, in which I plan to upload a new, totally spontaneous improvisation for solo lyre each week, in one of the documented ancient Greek modes...inspired directly from Apollo! • In this installment, here is the mastered improvisation for replica ancient Greek Kithara which I performed 'live' in last week's video - adding haunting reverb to enhance the unique and ancient timbre of the gut strings of my replica kithara. • My kithara features it's wonderfully reconstructed vibrato mechanism, on which it is also possible top perform sliding portamento effects, as heard in this improvisation, by wobbling one of the vertical levers above the yoke - which gives lateral movement to the curved wooden springs beneath the yoke, which moves the strings, thus creating the portamento/vibrato effects - some 2500 years before the invention of the 'whammy bar' of our modern electric guitar! • The wonderful replica kithara I am playing, is the 9-string Cithara of the Golden Age , hand-made in modern Greece by Luthieros: • http://en.luthieros.com/ • For more details about my ongoing collaboration with Luthieros in their 'Lyre 2.0 Project', dedicated to reintroducing the beautiful lyres of antiquity back into the hands of every modern imaginative musician, please also see my website blog: • http://www.ancientlyre.com/the_lyre_2... • Many thanks for watching!
