After a slow start the S P/ASX200 index gained momentum across Thursday's session to finish 0.50% higher at 7,698.70. • Consumer Discretionary was among the best performing sectors, led by retailer Harvey Norman (HVN), which reported lower sales and earnings, but flagged a rebound in the second half. • This as January's retail trade figures came in 1.1% higher for the month, which was a slight miss on expectations that sales would bounce back strongly from a weak December. • The Star (SGR) lived up to its name on the local share market today, ending 8.33% higher after the casino operator delivered a $9 million net profit amid ongoing regulatory issues. Elsewhere in the gambling arena, pokie manufacturer Aristocrat Leisure (ALL) lifted, despite a full-year loss. • Ramsay Healthcare (RHC) shares bounced higher, even though it cut its dividend and warned that margins were under pressure. And shares in radio network SCA took a hit after also slashing its dividend as its net profit fell 71%. • Outside of earnings, South32 (S32) flagged a potential deal to sell its Illawarra coal business for up to $2.5 billion.
