When Sand Island Lighthouse fell into disrepair in the early 1920s, St. Paul schoolteacher Gert Wellisch stepped in, leasing the abandoned Apostle Islands beacon for $50. For 18 years, she preserved this historic 1881 Gothic-style lighthouse, documenting her work through photographs.
