Playwright Linda McLean talks about Castle Lennox (2023), a co-production between Lung Ha Theatre Company and The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh which she has written. • Lung Ha Theatre Company is one of Scotland's leading theatre companies working with actors with learning disabilities. • #CastleLennox • Filmed and edited by Stuart Platt. • 30 March 2023 to 1 April 2023 • By Linda McLean with music by Michael John McCarthy • Directed by Maria Oller • You said small spaces encourage large thoughts... and then you locked the door. • It's 1969. Annis, a young autistic woman, is sent by her stepmother to live as a patient at Castle Lennox, where the rules of the outside world do not apply. Desperate to escape, she very quickly lands herself in trouble and makes an enemy of the nurse in charge. Feeling lost and alone, she is befriended by fellow residents who show her another Castle Lennox, a world of colour and song, one that is a welcome relief from the monotonous regime of pills and porridge. But Annis can’t help wanting to be free. • Linda McLean (Glory on Earth at The Lyceum) has written a play with songs (by Michael John McCarthy) about the strength, wit and resilience of those who were sent to Castle Lennox during a regime of segregation from the 1930s to the 1990s. This inspiring tale, based on a real institution, is brought to the stage in collaboration with the brilliant Lung Ha Theatre Company (Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery, co-produced with Grid Iron, RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and We Are All Just Little Creatures, co-produced with Curious Seed and in collaboration with Lyra). • Please note this performance explores themes that might not be suitable for children, including discussions of eugenics and abuse within medical institutions. • A Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and Lung Ha Theatre Company co-production. • Supported by Margaret Duffy and Peter Williamson. • Creative Team • Writer Linda McLean • Composer Michael John McCarthy • Director Maria Oller • Associate Director Fiona Mackinnon • Set Designer Karen Tennent • Costume Designer Alison Brown • Lighting Designer Simon Wilkinson • Sound Designer Engineer Calum Paterson • Movement Director Janice Parker • Arranger Musical Director David Paul Jones • BSL Translator Rachel Amey • BSL Consultant Carol Robertson • Lung Ha Theatre Company Ensemble: • Amy McCombes Robyn (A patient) • Colin McIlveny Graham (A patient) • Emma Clark Jo (A patient) • Emma McCaffrey Annis (16) • Fern Brodie Norma (A patient) • Gavin Yule William (A patient, uses a wheelchair) • Jodie Lavin Cindy (A patient) • John Edgar Andy (A patient) • Kay Ann Jacobs Mrs Boyd (A Visitor) • Keith Watson Boss (A patient) • Kenneth Ainslie Thomas (A patient) • Leigh Flynn Molly (A patient) • Lewis Drummond Mr Boyd (A Visitor) • Liza Gogoliuk Mrs Herd (A Visitor) • Magnus Turpie Luke (A patient) • Mark Howie Noah (A patient) • Matthew Frame Pogo (A patient) • Morgan Dalgleish Dozey (A patient) • Naomi Dickie Bash (A patient) • Nicola Tuxworth Marie (A fellow patient) • Paul Harper Mitchel (State Enrolled Nurse) • Cast • Rachel Amey Annie’s mother and BSL interpreter performer • Kirsty Eila McIntyre A newly qualified State Enrolled Nurse • Kevin Lennon The Doctor in charge of the hospital • Fletcher Mathers Anni’s stepmother/The Laundress/Head of the Sewing Room/Staff Nurse who bullies AnnisCreative Team • Writer Linda McLean • Composer Michael John McCarthy • Director Maria Oller • Associate Director Fiona Mackinnon • Set Designer Karen Tennent • Costume Designer Alison Brown • Lighting Designer Simon Wilkinson • Sound Designer Engineer Calum Paterson • Movement Director Janice Parker • Arranger Musical Director David Paul Jones • BSL Translator Rachel Amey • BSL Consultant Carol Robertson
