Asymmetry is a powerful tool artists use to create balance and harmony. Imagine a painting of a tree. If the tree were centered in the frame, the painting would be symmetrical. But if the artist moved the tree to the left side of the frame, leaving empty space on the right, the painting has become asymmetrical. • Asymmetry creates a sense of interest and dynamism. The viewer’s eye is drawn to the tree on the left, but then they are also drawn to the empty space on the right. This creates a visual tension that is both pleasing and engaging. • Asymmetry can be found in all kinds of art, from painting and sculpture to photography and architecture. It creates balance, harmony, interest, and dynamism in their work. We, Ikebana artists, apply this principle all the time when making arrangements. • Curious to dive deeper into the world of ikebana?
