Listen to BFD2 mixed in a real song with vocals done on a Behringer T47 tube microphone, the guitar parts are played through a Gibson Satin White Flying V [solo @ 1:20] with Seymour Duncan JB pickups and a Fender Reggie Hamilton signature bass guitar. • Look, it was a Friday night and I'm alone in the house. What's a lonely musician to do but write a song. It's quick and dirty and a bit raw in the harmonies - the effort here, is to demonstrate how all the pieces can work together. • I used Ringo's Black Oyster kit in BFD2 with a Groove Monkee Rock Pop pallet [not the JM Grooves shown in the video - F!]. The only thing I changed on the mixer was activating the compressor on the stereo bus. • I've had the Behringer T-47 sitting in a drawer for about a year - bought it on Ebay because it looked kind of interesting with the tube in it. WOW! It is so clear and crisp - doesn't add a thing. I don't know if the tube actually does anything but it is too frick'n good for the $80 or $90 I paid for it. The URS Pro Channel real does work magic on vocals, too - using one of the presets it just drops the voice right where it should be in the mix. • Oh, and all of the guitars and vocals were processed through an M-Audio 1814 fire-wire interface. • The Flying V went through a Softube Vintage Amp Room plugin and the bass through a Softube Bass Room plugin. The Flying V is an interesting beast - I picked this one up used for about $700. I owned one of the $1,400 dollar ones two and there is a noticeable difference in their sounds - both US made but I'm pretty sure the Satin White uses offshore components but the thing is put together domestically. I had the Duncan's put in and it certainly gave it a unique personality - I can pull of a really fat, thick Leslie West when I put the selector switch in the middle and roll the tone knob almost completely over. The guitar, itself, is very light with a once piece body - not a lot of resonance so it's kind of thin - very distinctive sound. Oh, and listen for the tremolo on the rhythm guitar - that Vintage Amp Room plug in is killer... • The vocals were mixed together into a separate group using a URS Pro Channel plugin on the insert. The main vocals were center and the harmony were pushed far right. There was NO compression or other effects in the external signal chain - that's all performance. • The master bus had a Waves SSL 4000 Stereo Bus Compressor insert as well as a T-Racks Classic EQ. • And, yes - there is a strong Neil Young vibe to it... • === LYRICS === • It was raining on a Tuesday • When the phone rang in my head • And I woke up Friday morning • After everything was said. • There ain't nothing left between us • It's all slipped side to side • Guess I'll drink away another week • And smoke up all my pride. • When I'm all alone it all goes balck • The smoke surrounds my eyes • I'm sick and tired of sayin' I'm sorry • Every time I lie. • I'm all fucked up inside you see • I don't know who I'm not • So I make up all these stories • To find out what I got. • [Chorus] • There's gotta be some more to this • Than daddy left behind. • A son who thinks that shooting up • Is how to heal his mind. • The only train he rides these days • Follows every mark and track. • He'll ride the horse 'till it eats his soul • And lays him on his back.
