Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to STRUGGLE: Antaresian Legacy, a megawad released in 2018, a full twelve years after its inception, by antares031. Struggle makes significant modifications to Doom II’s weapons and enemy roster, even tinkering with the standard monsters’ attributes. The end result is a significantly faster and more dangerous iteration of the game we all know and love. From a design standpoint, Struggle is one of the most labor-intensive one-man undertakings I’ve seen in my travels through the Doomverse: these levels are huge, architecturally impressive, and meticulously detailed, no doubt the product of hundreds, or even thousands of hours of screen time. Whether or not you like antares’ brand of Doom (or the color blue), this megawad demands respect. For my part, I really do like antares’ brand of Doom, so this is going to be a fun one to cover.
