Ability to Turn Data into Insights • Starting with the most important skill that a data analyst (even a data scientist) must have is the ability to turn data into insights. You will need to analyse your data by measuring the right thing and asking the right questions so you can derive some insights which will then help your organisation with decision making. • Insights emphasize on the “why” this has happened and the “how” can we possibly fix it. • 2. Problem Solving Skills • In the real world of data, no problem is the same and certainly no solution is the same either. There are no fixed rules where you can follow and solve every problem. You will need to be able to solve problems efficiently and effectively. Now what do I mean by that? Efficiently; I mean that we do not live in a perfect world where we have all the resources available to use; we need to solve the problem with what we have at the time we have and making sure it’s the best possible solution we can provide. Effectively means that our solution should solve the problem 100% and not just some of the problem. • 3. Technical Skills • “Technical skills” is the most obvious skill a data analyst should have; considering data analysts are viewed as tech-geeks. Technical skills will help the analyst to be faster and better when it comes to solving problems, analysing data and providing insights. Looking at an industry level, the most used software is Excel. • The next most important technical skill is SQL; or other databases where you can still query using SQL. Looking at the fundamentals, all the data that you will be using is within SQL so it makes sense to learn SQL in order to extract that data and start your analysis. SQL also integrates with a lot of Visualisation tools (and big data tools like Azure, AWS, GCP) where you can use that combination to automate all your reports. • After SQL, I would suggest learning how to use Visualisation Tools like Power BI, Tableau Qlik Sense. • Lastly, I would suggest learning Python and/or R. Python and R will help you when it comes to machine learning (ML) projects like making predictions, forecasts, Run Rates and many more statistical projects. • 4. Communication Skills • Data Analyst don’t just interact with computers (although some of us wish) but also interact with other people in the organisation. The reasons you need to interact with other people are the following: • • You might have done some great analysis and have to present your results to the business • • You might need some data that is not in the database and you have to go talk to people to get that data • 5. Critical Thinking • Critical Thinking is not the same as Problem Solving described above. The difference is that every Data Analyst will ne engaged in solving a problem but whether or not he will be critical about it is a different question. Critical thinking is when you challenge your own presuppositions / assumptions. Questions like: • • Maybe I am wrong and not thinking this clear? • • I’m I doing this right? • • Is there another way of doing it better? Faster? • • Is there a hidden reason why “X” is asking me to follow this direction? • • Why this way over this way? • 5 + 1. Creativity • Creativity is an art wherever you apply it. As a data analyst, you will be presented with multiple scenarios that have not right or wrong answer nor a guide to follow. Hence, you will need to get creative when providing solutions. Creativity in the world of data can be applied on the following: • • You can get creative on the type of model or software you use for your analysis • • You can get creative when designing new reports / visualizations for the business • • You can get creative in including more data sources in your analysis to get a more complete picture • Data Analytics Course Link: http://ipidata.teachable.com/ • Excel Tutorial Links: • a. • Data Analytics Excel Tutorial 2020 - ... • b. • Aggregate Functions in Excel Tutorial... • c. • How to Create Pivot Tables and VLooku... • SQL Tutorial Links: • d. • SQL Tutorial for Beginners - Everythi... • e. • SQL Tutorial for Data Analysis 2020 -... • f. • How to Join Tables in SQL [LEFT, INNE... • Yiannis Pitsillides on Social Media: • / pitsillides91 • https://www.instagram.com/ypexists/?h... • https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pitsillid... • / 1500092413449073 • What skills needed for Data Analyst [2020]
