A few months later, its broadcast on radio was banned, as the Allies successfully launched the expected landing of British and American troops on Sicily on July 9-10, 1943. Consequently, in that same month, Italy severed its alliance with Germany following the overthrow of Mussolini, initiated by opposing fascists and monarchists. The lyrics were written by Ralph Maria Siegel, the father of composer Ralph Siegel. Hain, discovered by Winkler, was known for her coloratura soprano voice. Rudi Schuricke also recorded the song in 1943 for Polydor, accompanied by the orchestra of the Plaza Varieté in Berlin and the Waldo Favre Choir. • In May 1947, the song was released in the Soviet Occupation Zone by Amiga, with Kurt Reimann as the singer. In the Western zones and the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany, Rudi Schuricke's version became very popular from 1946 onward. In Switzerland, an interpretation by singer Gretl Rath also gained popularity. An English version (lyrics by Don Pelosi and Leon Powers) was released in 1948 in the United States by Gracie Fields under the title Fisherman of Capri (Bella Bella Marie). • Reception • The song exemplified the German longing for Italy, a sentiment that found expression in numerous romantic Schlager songs during World War II. This theme experienced a resurgence in the post-war economic boom, which allowed many West Germans to take holiday trips to the Mediterranean for the first time. Many later German Schlager songs followed the prototype set by Capri-Fischer, establishing the song as a forerunner of a distinct genre that continues to be cherished by Schlager singers to this day. • The piece became an evergreen classic, part of the repertoire for many artists such as Peter Kraus, Paola, Die Flippers, G.G. Anderson, and Vico Torriani. Max Raabe recounts that his Palast Orchestra included the song at the special request of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The NDW singer ZaZa also recorded a fast-paced version in 1982. • #ndw • #neuedeutschewelle • #newgermanwave • #electro
