Smitty Gatlin was one of the smoothest and best-loved lead singers in Southern Gospel music. Began his career with the Country Boys, a group he formed after Wally Fowler chose him to form and manage the Country Boys. It was on a suggestion by Fowler that Smitty and his recruits to form a new version of the recently-disbanded Oak Ridge Quartet. A committed Christian, Gatlin's struggle to serve his Lord ultimately led him to leave the Oaks in 1966 in order to accept a position as minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas.. A few years later Smitty formed the Smitty Gatlin Trio. We lost Smitty way to early at the age of 37 in 1972 following a bout with Cancer. The other members of the Trio are Bill Baize - Tenor and Bill Monroe -- Baritone. This is from the God Leads Us Along LP from 1967 • http://www.sgma.org/inductee_bios/smi...
