Her operatic works include That Hellbound Train, a jazz/blues “deal with the devil” story, Staggerwing (Opera Kansas), about the female pilots winning the 1936 Bendix Trophy Race, Song of the Nightingale (On Site Opera,) a modern retelling of the Hans Christan Anderson fairy tale, and No Ladies In the Lady's Book (Utah Opera) about the lost stories of women who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad. • Her musical for middle school performers, Like I Care!, Tale of a Middle School Scrooge, addresses issues of Internet pressures and bullying. She is the arranger of many of Alfred's musical theatre medlies including, Hamilton, Funny Girl, and In the Heights. • Lisa is the winner of the 2018 Opera America Grant for Female Composers, the 2020 Zepcik Modern Opera Commission, and a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts Award. • Lisa DeSpain is a Professor of Music at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY and clinician teaching masterclasses in composing for the musical theatre/opera stage.
