Replacing a Garbage Disposal

If you’re having trouble with your garbage disposal, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common household problems we hear about. The good news is that this tutorial is all you need to get back to pulverizing your food so you don’t have to worry about it stinking up your trash can! • The first order of business is to see if you can manually fix the disposal. Why buy a new one if you don’t have to? The first DIY hack is to press the reset button. You’ll find it on the bottom and it is typically red. Press it and see if it works. If that doesn’t work, stick a small wrench (like an allen wrench) directly in the middle hole at the bottom of the disposal. Rotate it around and listen for draining. If it drains, turn it on and see if it will run. Does it? You’re done! If it doesn’t, keep watching for how to replace it. • First and foremost you will want to unplug the disposal. This is important for electric purposes. • Unscrew the waste line. There’s a clamp and that is what you’ll need to disconnect. Then, use 2 screwdrivers and stick them in the holes on either side of the disposal and give them a firm twist. This will help you unscrew the disposal (because it can be on there pretty tight for a water seal). Slowly pull the disposal off. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull out the splash guard. These generally need replacement because they can get pretty gross and worn out. • Now you’re ready to install your new disposal. Look at the connections and check for grounding. The one we bought didn’t have that so we bought a power cord kit and it came with everything we needed. You’ll feed the wires through the protected opening with bushing and screw it in. Insert the wires and guide them towards the other opening and pull those through with your pliers. Using wire nuts, connect the wires. Then take a green grounding screw and secure the grounding wire into the hole. Tuck the wires in and add the cover plate. • Tighten the bushing. • Next remove the stop inside the garbage disposal. This is generally put in place in case someone does not have a water line to a dishwasher. It’s easy to remove, stick a screwdriver in and hammer it out. Make sure your lines are aimed properly at this point for easy connecting. • Take your 2 screwdrivers and stick them back into the holes of the garbage disposal and tighten very tightly. • If your waste line doesn’t fit, don’t panic. Use the one that came with your disposal. It’s easy to remove and reinstall using the parts it comes with. Secure the new waste line to the disposal and tighten very tightly to create a water seal. • Voila! You’ve just replaced your disposal. Congratulations.
