Legacy has 3 main meanings. • Firstly, as a countable noun, a legacy is money or property which someone leaves to you when they die. A synonym is ‘inheritance’. • Also, as a countable noun, legacy can be a situation that was caused by something from an earlier time. • Finally, as an adjective, but used with a noun, legacy computer software or hardware has been replaced by something more recent. • Legacy comes from Latin and Old French and first appeared in English from the late 14th century onwards. • Some example sentences are: • ‘She received a substantial legacy from her uncle, which allowed her to buy her first home.’ • ‘The industrial revolution's legacy of environmental pollution still affects many cities.’ • ‘The new software isn't compatible with our legacy hardware, so we'll need to upgrade everything.’ • This video can also be found on my website: https://bengooderham.com. • Sources: • https://www.etymonline.com/ - Online Etymology Dictionary • https://www.collinsdictionary.com/ - Collins Online Dictionary • https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dict... - Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary • https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionarie... - Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries
