Hidden Royal Gem: Eltham Palace Tour | 4K • Eltham Palace is a remarkable historical site located in Eltham, southeast London. You may get there by train from Charing Cross Station to Mottingham Station • Originally, Eltham Palace was a medieval royal residence, that dates back to the 14th century when It was granted to King Edward II in 1305 by the Bishop of Durham, Anthony Bek. Over the centuries, it became a favoured retreat for English monarchs. One of its most notable features from this period is the Great Hall, built during the reign of Edward IV in the late 15th century. The hall exemplifies medieval grandeur with its magnificent hammer-beam roof and served as a venue for royal feasts for centuries. • The Tudor court frequently celebrated Christmas at Eltham Palace. King Henry VIII spent his childhood at Eltham Palace. In 1499, he met the scholar Erasmus here, introduced by Thomas More. By the late 16th century, Eltham Palace began to fall out of favour with the royal family, Sir Anthony van Dyck was given a suite as a country retreat when the royal family no longer used the palace. • After the construction of Hampton Court Palace in the early 15th century, it gradually declined and fell into disrepair. However, its fortunes revived in the 1930s when the wealthy Courtauld family acquired it. They embarked on an ambitious renovation, transforming Eltham Palace into a luxurious Art Deco residence. This restoration blended the medieval architecture of the original palace with the modern style of the 20th century. • The interior of Eltham Palace from this period is a stunning example of Art Deco design, featuring elegant rooms, luxurious furnishings, and innovative technology. The Courtaulds' attention to detail and appreciation for historical and contemporary design created a unique fusion rare among historic sites. • The entrance hall, created by Swedish designer Rolf Engströmer, features light flooding in from a glazed dome, highlighting blackbean veneer and figurative marquetry. Other rooms, including the dining room, drawing room, and Virginia Courtauld's circular bedroom and adjoining bathroom, were designed by Italian designer Piero Malacrida de Saint-August, while Seely and Paget designed many of the bedrooms. Keen gardeners, the Courtaulds also significantly modified and improved the grounds and gardens. • Today, Eltham Palace is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its medieval Great Hall, the exquisite Art Deco interiors, and the beautiful gardens, offering a fascinating glimpse into England's royal history and 20th-century opulence. • Thanks for watching • Please, help my channel grow by subscribing to my YouTube channel •    / @travelwithrado   • Click the bell to receive notifications for my new videos!
