Aspects of Intonational Meaning: What do Our Voices Convey? • We know that the intonation of English (unlike tone languages such as Chinese) does not contribute to the propositional content of speech – the word ‘discourse’ with rising pitch still means ‘discourse’ if it’s said with falling pitch. But intonation is still communicative, and it is this - the way in which intonation contributes to human communication - that is the topic of this talk.⠀ • First of all, intonation can contribute to pragmatic meaning by distinguishing between speech acts. A falling pitch on ‘You’re hungry’ is a plain statement of fact, but with a rising pitch it can become a question, and with an extra-wide pitch range even a surprised question.⠀ • Intonation has an important role to play in indicating the broader structures of a text, as when reading aloud. A written text is usually printed so that a reader can see its structure – the title, where paragraphs begin and end, parentheses, reported speech, and emphasis. None of this is visible to a listener when the text is read aloud. We use intonation to convey much of this information.⠀ • The smooth operation of interpersonal conversation also depends in part on intonation in providing cues to turn-taking, such as giving way to another speaker. It is also possible to indicate degrees of affiliation, or sympathy, with the other speaker in the way pitch is used. This draws on the phenomenon of accommodation – evident in many aspects of human communication – which has a profound effect on how various interactions are perceived and how participants respond.⠀ • As well as expressing our attitude towards another speaker, our voices can reveal our own inner emotions. An angry voice is different from a gently reassuring voice and an exuberantly happy voice is quite different from a sad one.
