First viable blueprint for a large scale modular quantum computer with trapped ions unveiled by the Ion Quantum Technology Group at the University of Sussex. The group lead by Professor Winfried Hensiger focuses on developing future quantum technologies using trapped atomic ions such as the fabrication of ultra sensitive portable quantum sensors, quantum simulators and the construction of a working scalable quantum computer demonstrator device. By harnessing the quantum effects of atoms this device, often referred as the holy grail of Science , could unveil some of the greatest scientific mysteries of our time while opening a whole new range of applications for fields such as medicine and commerce. • In this video the working principle of a modular scalable trapped ion quantum computer using microwaves and ion shuttling techniques is illustrated. The novel architecture makes use of the new invention made by the group that drastically simplifies the engineering challenges linked to the development of such technology.
