(7 Apr 2000) English/Nat • • The U-S Attorney-General has ruled that Elian Gonzalez should be turned over to his father. • • She said the boy's Miami relatives have been asked to meet psychologists and psychiatrists on Monday to determine how the transfer should take place. • • She urged all those involved to make the process as pain-free as possible for Elian. • • The government next week will move to reunite Elian Gonzalez with his father. • • The announcement was made by Attorney General Janet Reno on Friday, after meeting Juan Miguel Gonzalez. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • Yesterday Mr Gonzalez came to our country to be reunited with his son. Today we moved forward with that reunification. Early next week we will give the relatives instructions on when and where Elian is to be turned over to his father, and at that time the INS will formally transfer parole and care to the father. By letter today we are asking the relatives to meet on Monday with two eminent psychiatrists, and a distinguished psychologist to determine how the transfer can take place with as little disruption for Elian as possible • SUPER CAPTION: Janet Reno, US Attorney General • • Justice officials said only the next two steps were clear. • • The Miami relatives will get a letter advising them of the date on which custody of Elian would be legally transferred to his father. • • A second letter shortly thereafter would instruct them where and when to give up custody, officials said. • • If the relatives refused, the government had two options; it could return to federal court for an order reinforcing its instructions. • • Or the government could try to remove the boy from Lazaro's home in Miami's Little Havana section. • • But the Attorney-General urged everybody involved to make the process as painless as possible for the little boy. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • This case has struck the heart and soul of the world. I urge everybody involved to move forward. To effect this reconciliation, and this reunification, as soon as possible. Elian deserves the very very best. The best we can give him, for he has been through so much. And in his own way, rather than tear us apart, he has bought us together to understand the strength of the human spirit. Lets not disappoint him • SUPER CAPTION: Janet Reno, US Attorney General • • But that was the least favoured option, because of the prospect for conflict with Cuban exiles. • • To entice Lazaro to give up the boy, federal officials offered assurances that the father and son would remain in this country until a federal appeals court rules on the case, expected in late May. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
