Part 5 of ☆ANCIENT HISTORY JEWELRY STORIES☆ and in this one I clearly have deep personal opinions about Heinrich Schliemann and the victorian concept of the amateur archeologist 🙄 This time we venture to the ancient Homeric city of Troy (yes that Troy) and the splendid golden treasures found there. Which didn't belong to Priam, despite the name, or Helen of Troy, despite often being connected to her, too. Who even is Priam? Unsurprisingly, given Schliemann's pedigree, he probably wasn't even a real person, but a mythological figure who supposedly lived during the time of the Trojan war. • I'm conflicted about the whole letting-your-wife-wear-the-jewels thing. It's kind of like the victorian era mummy unwrapping party. Was that a terrible thing to do to historical artifacts which are ALSO human remains deserving respect? Yes. Am I super curious about what being part of a mummy unwrapping party would have been like? Also, yes. • I wish we knew more about Priam's Treasure, but a whole century and a half of drama has kept it away from researchers and (real!) archeologists.
