The Curse of Karen. Karen has a curse put on her after being particularly rude to a couple of slightly unhinged customers, but that won't bother her. Or will it? Meanwhile, Dexter finds out what a little bit of power can do to a person, and Terry Hall and Lenny the Lion book the restaurant as it's the perfect location to shoot their live Saturday television show. Nothing could possibly go wrong. • This episode was first broadcast in the much-coveted last-thing-on-a-Friday slot on 27th March 1992, and by this stage everyone was absolutely at the top of their game - hard to fathom that the series was axed after just a couple more shows. This one is very much Karen's story, and Jennifer Calvert is absolutely stellar throughout. But look out for a proper all-star guest cast: Denise Coffey (Granny Bag in later episodes of T-Bag, The Tomorrow People, the woman with Wordy on Dark Towers, and the seminal Do Not Adjust Your Set), Anna Wing (Lou Beale in EastEnders), Jan Ravens (Dead Ringers), Lucy Briers (Pride and Prejudice amongst so much else), and the aforementioned Messrs Hall and Lion. • On that subject, it's a pity that there's so little Terry Hall and Lenny the Lion out there these days - they're on the verge of being forgotten if we're not careful, but were absolutely huge in their heyday, with a prime time TV programme in the 60s. I love the story that, even when The Beatles appeared on their show, Terry still got to keep the star dressing room! There's one other brief television appearance from them on my channel: • • Lenny the Lion and Terry Hall meet Ro... • Plus a quick search turned up this: • • Rainbow - New Friends • I'm reliably informed that a young fan named David Jones had a hand in running the Lenny the Lion fan club way back when. That particular little lad later changed his name to David Bowie. (There's a Joe the Lion joke in here somewhere, but it's just not coming to me, I'm afraid.) • There's some nice Tommy Boyd Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end, and I've even left in an animated Milky Way advert right at the start to get you in the mood. Couldn't happen nowadays, of course, due to strict laws on junk food ads aimed at kids. But at least childhood obesity has gone down since that came in! • Many thanks as always to Lee for providing this recording. • (This is a transfer from an old videotape, so please don't expect full HD quality.
