Summary of Imitating the English Gentleman by MK (Mahatma) Gandhi from his book My Experiment with Truth in English. • Questions/Answers: https://onlinefreenotes.com/imitating... • OFN app: https://bit.ly/2BvU7qD • The essay Playing or Imitating the English Gentleman recounts Mahatma Gandhi's struggle to blend in with the English society while studying law in London. • In the essay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi discussed how his life in London was difficult because he was a vegetarian, and his friend did not appreciate this. Gandhiji studied various books on health and hygiene. • He was also heavily influenced by great thinkers such as Pythagoras and other vegetarians. He realised the importance of health and religion in one's life. • Gandhiji’s friend, however, felt that vegetarianism would be a barrier to his development. Gandhiji had gone to Holborn Restaurant with his friend one day. His friend had assumed that Gandhiji would not ask any questions because he would be surrounded by so many others. It was a fancy place and a new experience for Gandhiji. • He and his friend sat at the same table, and the first course was soup. Gandhiji, however, tried to inquire if the soup was vegetarian and immediately summoned the waiter. His friend became irritated and requested that he leave the restaurant and wait outside for him. • Gandhiji went out to find a vegetarian restaurant, but the nearest restaurant of his choice had already closed. He accompanied his friend to the theatre after that- empty stomach without saying anything. • Gandhiji attempted to cultivate other habits in order to please his friend and compensate for his vegetarianism. He purchased new clothes appropriate for English society, including a chimney-pot hat, an evening suit made in Bond Street, and a gold double watch chain. • He began spending 10 minutes each day in front of a large mirror parting his hair and arranging his tie. He also began taking dance, violin, French, and elocution lessons. • Gandhiji had decided to take elocution lessons in order to become an English gentleman, and he was advised to purchase Bell's Standard Elocutionist as a textbook. But as he began reading the book, he realised he was chasing a false ideal. • He realised that he was in England to study, and everything he was getting himself involved in instead, had nothing to do with studies. Also, he would not be in England forever. It became clear to him that he should be a man of character instead. • After that, he dropped his plans to become an English gentleman in favour of focusing on developing a good character, reminding himself that he was in London to study, not to live there for the rest of his life. • Music Info: Long Calming Piano Background by DS Productions • Music Link: • Long Calming Piano Background - Music...
