Explains how to do determine the direction of the force on a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field. Due to the magnetic force the particle will travel on a circular path. Use your right hand and point your thumb in the direction of the direction of the charges motion, point your fingers in in the direction of the magnetic field and the palm of your hand will point in the direction of the magnetic force. • For negatively charged particles use your left hand. • Electromagnetic induction is the production of an emf or voltage in a coil of wire due to a changing magnetic field through the coil. Michael Faraday is generally credited with its discovery in 1831. James Clerk Maxwell mathematically described it as Faraday's law of induction. Faraday's law states that an emf will be induced in a coil of wire when the magnetic flux through the coil of wire changes over time. Magnetic flux is calculated as the area of the coil (A) times the magnetic field strength (B). • Lenz's law describes the direction of the induced magnetic field.
