Presented At: • Microbiology Immunology 2018 • Presented By: • Haley Appaneal, Pharm D. - Research Health Scientist, Providence VA Medical Center • Speaker Biography: • Dr. Appaneal is a clinician scientist with expertise in infectious diseases, antibiotic stewardship, and pharmacy practice (Pharm D). She completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center in July 2012 and subsequently a two-year VA funded post-doctoral fellowship for PharmDs in July 2014. Her fellowship training was in ID clinical outcomes with a focus on the appropriate use and safety of antibiotics. Since completing her fellowship, Dr. Appaneal has been a health services investigator at Providence VAMC with the Rhode Island ID (RIID) Research Program and a core member of the Providence VAMC's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Her research focuses in improving the quality of patient care nationally through reduction of inappropriate antibiotic use. • Webinar: • Antimicrobial Stewardship - Its Role in Managing Antibiotic Resistance • Webinar Abstract: • Antibiotic resistance is a national and global public health crisis. Each year in the United States (US), at least 2 million people become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. An estimated 14,000 deaths each year occur due to C. difficile infection. The driving force that selects for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and promotes Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection is antibiotic use. Since at least 50% of antibiotic use is inappropriate in the US regardless of healthcare setting, antibiotic stewardship activities are extremely important in managing antibiotic resistance. • • Learning Objectives: • 1.
