Dozens of UC workers and students protested at the UC Regents meeting on May 17, 2017 at the UC Mission Bay campus about the growing corruption scandal of UC President Janet Napolitano who engaged in a manipulation an audit and cover-up of $175 million in public funds while increasing student fees, increasing executive salaries/ bonuses and outsourcing UC workers to India. • After speaking out in protest at the meeting the students and workers began to chant shutting down the meeting. The Chair adjourned the meeting and ordered all protesters to leave or be arrested by the UC police. • While conspiring to cover-up this money from the CA State Auditors, UC President Janet Napolitano and the UC Regents have been voting to increase fees for students, contracting out work including tech works at UC and privatizing other services including gardeners and medical interpreters. They and their corporate management have also been attacking the defined pension benefit plans of UC workers. Some, like the clericals represented by IBT 2010 have already accepted a two tier pension system forcing newly hired employees into 401K pension plans which means they lose their defined pension benefits when they retire. • The students and workers talked about their dire economic conditions including some students going hungry in one of the richest places in the world. • Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom who is a UC Regent said the audit was too strict and that UC president Janet Napolitano was doing a good job. Also UC regent billionaire Richard Blum who is married to US Senator Diane Feinstein has said that UC President is doing an excellent job. “I’m not easily snowed over, and in my opinion Janet Napolitano is an excellent UC president, and I support her,” Blum said.
