On July 10th, 1942, the US Navy accidently discovered a recoverable Mitsubishi A6M Zero that had crash landed on the eastern Aleutian Island of Akutan. The Zero had been shot up over Dutch Harbor during the previous month, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. While attempting to land, his gear became mired in the mud, causing the plane to flip over. Upon discovery a month later, US personnel were able to salvage the Zero and began analyzing it. 2 months later, the Zero flew again, but this time bearing the colors of the United States Navy. Data from the Zero, along with test flights, would help to create the tactics that would be largely responsible for the Zero's downfall. Unfortunately, the Akutan Zero was destroyed during a training accident in 1945, but parts of it are preserved in several museums throughout the United States. • #pacificwar #unitedstatesnavy #worldwar2 #navalhistory #alaska
