Make Venezuelan arepas, oh so yummy!! What are arepas? They are like a corn little hot pocket that can be filled with almost anything. I would stay away from sweet fillings (like jams and jellies), but that is just me. I think it shines with meats, beans, cheeses, eggs and fish. In general protein or veggies are great for arepas. You can vary the size to bite size or huge for a meal. They can be deeped fried or the more healty version, the one above with little or no fat. Ingredient list: • 1 cup of Harina Pan (corn flour) or masarepa. Don't use mexican corn flour or the taste and texture will be very different... • 1 cup of water • 1 teaspoon of salt or less if watching your salt intake, of stuffing it with something really salty • That is it. The basic arepa. However I like to add 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds and/or flax seeds to make it healthier and more nutritious. It also adds an extra layer of crunchiness to the arepa. Oh so yummy. • Mix all the ingredients and knead the dough. It has to feel like play-dough, soft smooth and when you shape it into a ball and flatten it, it should not crack. If it does, add one tablespoon of water at a time, to hydrate the dough. • Make four balls and flatten them with the palms of your hands and place them in the hot griddle. They are ready to turn when the patty releases from the griddle. Flip and repeat. Now it is time for the oven. Follow the video and you should be done in 15 more minutes. Las fritas se hacen mas rápido pero engordan mas. Para desayunar, las encuentro muy grasosas. Por las mañanas me encanta una arepa caliente sacada del horno y rellena con queso amarillo, blanco o con un huevo frito. Mmm, se me hace la boca agua con solo imaginármela... • La lista de ingredientes la puedes encontrar en el minuto 0:38 del video. Es tan fácil que lo mas difícil es darle la forma perfectamente redonda, espero que la disfruten. Un consejo, no usen la harina de maíz mejicana, porque cambia la textura de la masa y el sabor no es igual. Usen harina PAN, Masaarepa o Doñarepa. Solo harinas de Venezuela y Colombia para el sabor autentico. A comer...
