On June 4th, 2011, a powerful volcanic eruption began in central Chile. A large explosion occurred, causing a 5 kilometer wide plinian column to shoot to a height of 10 kilometers or 33,000 feet above sea level. This eruption was the largest to occur on the planet in 20 years, and would go on to create a fascinating geologic feature; a solid pure obsidian lava flow. Over the next 10 months, this lava flow of pure obsidian advanced across the landscape, depositing 350 million tons of black volcanic glass. • If you would like to support this channel, consider becoming a patron at   / geologyhub  . • Another way to support this channel is to make an order via our gemstone and geology related etsy store at http://prospectingarizona.etsy.com. • This channel's merch store is also on etsy at http://geologyhub.etsy.com. • Graphics of eruption dates are courtesy of the Global Volcanism Program, Smithsonian Institute. https://volcano.si.edu/ • Thumbnail Photo Credit: @TheVolcanoFiles (twitter), volcanofiles.com, CC BY-SA 3.0.
