In this video, the reason why polycythemia happens at high altitudes is discussed. High altitude is a type of hypoxic hypoxia. • At high altitudes there is renal hypoxia which leads to production of hypoxia inducible factor-1 which binds to hypoxia response element in the erythropoietin gene. Finally there is an increase in erythropoietin which leads to the stimulation of pro erythroblast causing an increase in RBC count. • #polycythemia • #highaltitude • #mbbsphysiology • #explainwhyseries • Channel details: • Welcome to my physiology learning channel.
