Functionally, the non screw-down crown could quickly lead to a damaged timepiece. In short, even if a timepiece without a screw-down crown states acceptable water resistance, never swim with it! This is because an unexpected strike on the back of the crown could release it and let water in. Most screw-down crowns would take significant abuse to open and let water in.
