Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Auger;Zenith, a 22-level megawad released in 2021 as the thirty-seventh entry in the Doomer Boards Projects series. Every month, members of the Doomer Boards convene to create a new wad based on a set of custom resources provided by the month’s project leader. Now midway through its fourth year, the DBPs have covered an impressive range of themes. Some of them get pretty specific, like the 16th entry, which tasks the player with performing a colonoscopy on a cyberdemon Honey I Shrunk The Kids style. Auger Zenith, marketed as the ultimate cyberpunk Doom project, is probably the most widely played and best-reviewed work to come out of the Doomer Boards since their inception. Even though the hype was nearly universal, I didn’t believe it, and went in expecting flashy visuals but not much substance. Three playthroughs later, I’m happy to report that the hype is real. I may not cover any more DBPs on this show since there are so many of them, but I think it’s safe to encourage checking them out.
