This week’s Film Jams episode is comparing and finding out what is the best director’s monitor cage. On set, it’s not often that you think about the equipment used for the director or client’s monitor, but it can really improve how they see the footage. Back in the day, I used an old TV for a monitor, but now there are so many more convenient options that you can just hold on set. • A portable monitor is a game changer on set. My last monitor setup was using a 9’’ Marshall monitor mounted on a light stand. After that I started using SmallHD monitors. I use the 502, DP7, and 702 and have used them also mounted on a light stand. This is nice, but it still has its limitations, for instance you can’t have a client use it and walk around, it has the possibility of tipping over if there is too much equipment on it, or if you want to attach a Teradek. • One of the cages we’re looking at in this video is the SmallHD Focus Bolt Sidekick. This cage is a monitor and Teradek receiver in one. It also comes with handles and a strap for wearing around the neck. The dual nature of it makes it very lightweight and convenient to carry around. • The other cage we’re looking at is the Shape Director’s Monitor Cage. This cage has a steep price tag ($760) but it definitely worth it if you are in the market for a good quality monitor cage that also can hold many accessories. It’s super easy to set up and is incredibly flexible. • Do you have other suggestions for good director’s monitors or cages?
