The ExploreStars App by Explore Scientific is a simple, easy to use application for controlling the Explore Scientific PMC-Eight. • ExploreStars features beautiful images of the solar system and Messier catalog, and features a database of over 70,000 stars. Additionally, the app has excellent descriptions for the Messier objects as well as the solar system objects. A new amateur astronomer can learn much about the night sky from simply reading the object descriptions in this app! • The controls are smooth and simple to use, whether that be for alignment or manual skewing. The software includes an option to park the mount, returning the mount to the index marks. • The app can connect to your devices location, and input the time as well as your location. This saves you time during alignment as you don’t have to manually input these values, nor do you have find your location. Not only does this save time, but it saves money as no aftermarket GPS is needed. Better yet, this software gives you the ability to control your mount from anywhere, anytime. • To be honest, I have never been great with learning the names of stars and constellations in the night sky. Sure, I know the popular constellations and alignment stars, but of the many stars visible to us I only know a fraction of them. This is where ExploreStars is especially helpful for beginners or someone like me. Instead of having to open a planetarium program to find potential alignment stars, the app features star maps. These star maps show you the constellation of your alignment star, or object, and have a flashing dot to show precisely where the object is located. This feature is not limited to just alignment stars, but any object that you have slewed to in the catalog! For example, when viewing the Pleiades, a dot shows your right where the Seven Sisters are located in Taurus. This is an excellent feature sure to help beginners learn the sky. • The app does feature a standard night mode for using at night, and looks to be primarily designed for use with a tablet. It will work with a computer, but performing an alignment while holding a computer is a bit cumbersome! It is much easier using a phone or tablet. Currently the app is for Windows only, but in time will be compatible with iOS and Android operating systems. • Lastly, this is an open source program, so all you coders out there can really go to town! This is a huge benefit to be able to code in your own programs or features, and it will be great to see what people produce. • Please consider making your astronomy purchases from my AgenaAstro affiliate link below.
