Resident Evil is a 2002 survival horror remake of the 1996 PS1 game of the same name. This game was developed and published by Capcom and was even directed by the same person who directed the original game his name is Shinji Mikami. When Capcom and Nintendo exclusively agreed to port Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and Resident Evil Code Veronica (which was originally going to be the third game) to the GameCube Capcom decided to do a remake of the first Resident Evil game to appeal to a newer audience. With the updated hardware of the GameCube, it allowed the game to achieve motion picture quality visuals and be even scarier and more suspenseful. I actually like the remake better than the original because it has more to explore, the controls and voice acting are better and Capcom even wanted to make sure the people that played the 1996 original would enjoy it.
