An explanation and rendition of Unetanah Tokef. • Featuring Hazzan Tibor Kovari, Rabbi Louis J. Sachs, and piano accompaniment by Reuven Grajner. • • This piece of the High Holiday liturgy is theologically difficult for many. Who will live and who will die? Who by fire and who by water? Does God really decide these things? • For some, this piece is not only challenging but painful. Are they really to believe that if they were more meticulous in keeping Shabbat, or putting on tefillin that their diagnosis would be different? • For those, who like me, find this idea difficult to relate to, I want to offer another way of understanding these words. Unetanah Tokef is about more than theology, its an expression of fear. • The author of this piece is expressing a universal fear of what we cannot control or even know. What will happen in the year to come? Nobody can tell us the answer with certainty. But this piece is not pessimistic, it shares with us an important answer. • If we are part of a community then whatever the year brings, its difficult moments will be eased because we will have others with whom to share our burdens. • Shanah Tovah! • Follow Rabbi Louis J.
