In this video, we’ll show you how to do Tasmanian devil spins! This can be a powerful activity to add to your child’s sensory diet, as a way to either wake up or calm down the body. • Tasmanian devil spins are all about going around and around in circles! These rotational movements are examples of vestibular input. Vestibular sensations can alert the body, or conversely, can calm an overactive body down. • To do Tasmanian devil spins, stand up straight with your arms out to the side, in the shape of a T. Spin around in a circle 5 times one way, then spin 5 times the other way. • If you feel dizzy, give yourself some proprioceptive input in the form of jumping up and down, crawling, or chewing on some gum or ice. These are examples of proprioceptive input, which can often counteract an individual overstimulated by vestibular sensation. • The MoveAbout channel is made by a group of paediatric occupational therapists who are passionate about having fun and promoting children’s physical and emotional development through sensory-based, play-based, and relationship-based activities. Our channel has tons of videos with great activity ideas and information for parents, caregivers, teachers, and other therapists! • For other ideas on sensory diet and movement activities, check out the rest of our MoveAbout Activity Card playlist: https://bit.ly/2WAwftG • To purchase the MoveAbout Activity Cards, click this link: https://rb.gy/ecqolg • These videos are intended for parents, occupational therapists, educators and other health professionals to help get your child moving and regulated! They are intended to be done with adult supervision and participation in order to ensure correct alignment and form of the child. • We also acknowledge that every child and environment is unique, so we would like to emphasize that these videos are not a stand alone occupational therapy program. A sensory diet is a tool that is best used with supervision from a trained occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant.
