In this case, the Westboro Baptist Church and its members were sued by the father of a Marine who was killed in Iraq for intentionally inflicting emotional distress, invasion of privacy by intrusion upon seclusion, and conspiracy. The defendants argued that punitive damages awarded by the jury violated the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. The court found that the defendants were liable for their tortious conduct, and the plaintiff was awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages and $8 million in punitive damages. The defendants' motions for judgment and relief from judgment were denied, but their motions for remittitur were granted in part, and the punitive damages award was reduced to $2.1 million. • Snyder v.
