Hello friends! • A raga that evokes inexplicable emotions in our hearts and often melts it would be Charukeshi. Eternally popular, extremely well-loved by rasikas of all ages and tastes. Charukeshi (meaning ‘one with beautiful hair’) is a melodious raga, imported from Carnatic music. It both ascends and descends with seven swaras (S R G M P D N S), with Shadaj and Madhyam being the Vadi and Samvadi, and Pancham often being played weakly. It favours long melodies, and artists are free to elaborate in all octaves. Sitarist Alif Laila describes charukeshi as “an endless tapestry in space. The melody seems to flow into infinity, connecting with the unknown...the mind and heart yearns for more of its mysterious charm”. This Raag is played and sung during the second phase of the day that is from 9AM to 12PM. Komal Dhiavat Komal Nishad have been used in this Raag. • The song that probably tops every playlist in Charukesi would be ‘Manmadha Leelaiyai' from the film “Haridas”. This song was one of the earliest appearances of Charukeshi on the silver screen, and till today, remains one of the best. In Hindi film music, the song ‘Ahista Ahista' from the movie “Swades”, Akele Hain Chale Aao from the movie 'Raaz', Bainya Na Dharo from the movie 'Dastak', Chhod De Saari Duniya Kisi Ke Liye from the movie 'Saraswati Chandra', etc, are good examples of Charukeshi raga. • Our students are presenting two melodious compositions set in Waltz beat (three beats in a measure) and Quarter beats. The composition has been originally composed by Surmani Agni Verma, Rhythm by Mr. Shivaji Gaikwad.
