Villiers Island new Toronto Island park and community in the Port Lands Construction update. One of the biggest civil works projects in North America. Engineering an entirely new river creating an Island for a new community. • Designed to protect from flooding with a new river and wetlands through previously contaminated lands by cleaning contaminated soil. • The entire river valley was divided by underground walls referred to as plugs. There are three plugs, • West Plug where the new river meets lake Ontario, removed July 2024 . • South Plug which connects one of the wetlands to the ship channel. • North Plug connecting Don River to the new river valley, currently removing. • Crews have begun removing an underground wall that connects the river with the new artificial waterway carved through the Port Lands, meaning the long-industrialized Don River will soon once again terminate in a meandering wetland for the first time in over 100 years. • The north plug takes the form of a one-metre-wide reinforced concrete wall that extends from the bedrock below the riverbed to a couple of metres above the waterline. Removing them requires heavy equipment and plenty of time. • Crews are using an excavator equipped with a grinder attachment to chew away at the concrete, leaving behind just the steel beams. These reinforcing beams will then be cut off by divers and pulled out of the river using an excavator, connecting the Don River. • Thanks for watching! • Please subscribe and like, thanks for the support. • #toronto #torontoconstruction #newdevelopment #torontoislands #torontoparks #torontowalk • • 0:00 Entering Villiers Island • 0:17 Future Promontory Park Area • 2:56 Canoe Cove at Promontory Park • 3:04 Moving Across the Street • 3:19 River Valley Park Area • 7:27 Too Commissioners Street Bridge • 7:34 Cobble Beach at River Valley Park • 8:55 River Valley Park South / Don Greenway • 9:13 Across the street North • 9:15 Future Villiers Park Area • 9:46 Removing Don River Plug Green Space • 12:10 Heading back West • 12:16 Future Infrastructure Area • 12:28 Cherry Street Old Bridge / Keating Channel • 13:55 Future Infrastructure Area • 14:07 Keating Channel • 14:09 Leaving Island Cherry Street Bridge North
