Known as the “Black Edison”, Ohio native Granville T. Woods registered nearly 60 patents in his lifetime, mostly for electrical devices. His most important invention was the multiplex telegraph which allowed people to communicate by voice over telegraph wires. The patent for this device combined the telephone and telegraph and was purchased by Alexander Graham Bell.
