YULIN, CHINA — The annual dog meat and lychee fruit festival marks the summer solstice in Yulin, China. But animal rights activists are taking a hard stance against the traditional celebration. • An estimated 10,000 dogs are killed for their meat every year at the festival. Although the government doesn't do anything to promote the festival, animal rights activists are calling on it to put a stop to the festivities. • One of the problems is that pet dogs are kidnapped and sold on the market. To counter this, some activists buy dogs as a way to rescue them from the meat market. An online petition to stop the festival has been signed by 3.8 million people. • Although the market for dog meat is mostly illegal, participants say the dogs are killed humanely and they aren't forcing anyone to eat dog meat. The practice of eating dog meat started around 500 years ago, and eating dog meat is supposed to, according to traditional Chinese medicine, help people cope with the summer heat. • ----------------------------------------------------------- • Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
